I wanted to keep this post simple, so that means no photos, or anything that would distract from why I’m doing this and how I feel, both for starting and the future.
Well, in starting it’s a relief, and, if I’m being honest, almost as though I haven’t! That’s not because we’re doing badly, like any new business it will take time to build, but then again, with no major investment, it should take time, as good solid foundations will need to be laid. Obviously some of the foundations are laid pre-trading, but then you go on and there are important things to keep in mind to help build for the long term. Another reason why it feels as though it hasn’t actually started, is down to the fact that I’m doing something I’m already passionate about, something that if I wasn’t running as a business, I’d be doing it for wildlife anyway. I guess that’s the important part to all of this – that this is not a job to me, it’s a love of both plants and wildlife, that combine in such a way that I can help the wildlife that’s being failed, whilst enjoying the plants that I, or we, grow. I guess the biggest difference early on is the amount of time and money you can put into something to make a difference, but it isn’t everything.
At the moment, we’re not an established company, but, from a personal point of view, the fact that any plants are being sold is a good and positive thing, because it means plants are going into places I can’t reach, with money being spent, that I don’t have. It reminds me of a story where a man was walking along a beach only to find lots of starfish washed up on the shore. The man stopped and started to throw some back into the sea. Another person came along and said “What’s the point in doing that? What difference will it make?” The man responded by throwing another starfish back into the sea and simply said, “Well, it made a difference to that one.” I don’t know how big this will get, but I have a responsibility to act on the thing that concerns me and if this goes well, then in the future I will have more time and more money to put into just one of the many things that need our help in this world. Who knows, your heart cry and responsibility may be for the poor in our cities, whilst someone else’s maybe for the poor in another country, the important thing is to be true to your heart and do what you can. In our case, if we sell plants, it’ll have further reaching benefits in the future…..
…..The future – Well, there are some wants, but how we get there, who knows? I’d like to see us selling wildlife habitats, this would serve two purposes. The first, and some people may not like my honesty, but selling plants is seasonal and you have to have solutions to bills, which are not seasonal, but monthly! So it is obvious, even if some don’t like it, that we will have to deal with that in the future. The second, and no less important reason, is to benefit wildlife. Remember, this is more to me, and to us as a company, than earning money, but earning money means you can begin to do more things, so that can only be a good thing. Thankfully, when it comes to wildlife habitat, errors are being learned and things like hedges are being planted again, but for urban areas, especially terraced housing like ours, a neighbour may not appreciate your pet appearing through a gap in the hedge and into their garden, nor the fact they’d have to cut their side of it, so we do have to be sensitive, which is another reason why we’d like to sell wildlife habitats, such as bird boxes, because they provide a good alternative.
Another thing we’d like to do is to run teaching sessions so that people are educated and equipped to make a difference. What could we teach? Well, we could do a session on the plants themselves, with their growing needs, habit and attraction to certain wildlife being covered. We could do something on wildlife itself and the habitats they need, or maybe even some garden design classes to help you make the most out of what you have, what you want and what you order with us. Education is a powerful tool in changing the future.
Videos and tutorials. Now, I can’t think for the life of me why anyone would want me to do a video and have to see my face on their screens, especially in HD. Oh dear! Though, on the plus side, no one will see how short I am, or bald I am (I’ll wear a hat to prevent glare) and it is a great way of teaching and reaching a media driven culture. This may be a way off, my heart is pounding at just the thought of it, I mean, how do you appear natural on screen, to an audience you can’t see? Well, whatever the answer is, it is a consideration.
Well, I think I’ve gone on long enough, in fact, I’m not even sure anyone will be reading now, but if you are, then thank you for taking your time to read this as it is very important to both myself, and us as a company, to be honest and clear about why we’re doing what we’re doing. I mean, there’s no doubt about it, but some of you reading this will resonate with what I’ve wrote and will feel inspired enough to make a difference, and, if it’s wildlife, you may even buy our plants, which means we also get to take part in you making a difference! Isn’t that great!!
So, till next time, spread the word and remember, together we’re better, let’s create a buzz!
