Verbena bonariensis – could I be without this? Never!! I can’t believe how great a plant this is, tall, yet see through and great at the front of the border as a look through plant, elegant, hardy, self seeding, loved by butterflies, attractive to bees and moths, easily controlled, (though why would you?) and great in vases too, if that’s your thing and they just keep on flowering for months, well into times of frost. Oh, and birds enjoy showing off their gymnastics whilst eating their seed heads. Is there any downside to it? Yes, it needs to be planted in big numbers to be appreciated to its fullest. Is that a bad thing? Never!!
