I want to say this is easily one of my favourites, but I’m addicted to plants and can never quite decide which one is, but this is always there for me. Knautia macedonica is such an interesting plant, you honestly can’t quite believe their thin wiry stems could hold up that many pincushion type flowers, but it does and it does it in numbers, which is great because the sumptuous red is simply gorgeous. The butterflies will be very happy you’ve added this, as will the bees which come in great numbers to feed off its many flowers. Knautia can become a bit too leggy in really rich soil, so they may need some scraping away, or at least a lot of grit/rubble added to make it more poor, whilst powdery mildew can be a problem, but, that said, it doesn’t affect the flowering and the wildlife love it too much to leave out, which at the end of the day, is what this website is all about, so if you want a really good, long flowering plant, with sumptuous red flowers and tons of pollinators, then you have to include this one.
